Across scientific research, conservation, field surveying, and beyond, organisations are already using technology to incredible effect. Yet even when high quality data is available, it is frequently under-exploited.
Because remote data sources are predominantly intermittent, discrete, or offline, they’re often mistreated as ad-hoc datasets rather than operational data streams. The result is painful: restrictive downstream models and heavy manual wrangling, minimal automated quality testing, and most importantly, poor integration to core operational stacks.
In order to extract maximum value, remote datasets must be treated as operational streams. That means extensive model design and optimisation for anticipated payloads, automated quality testing, stream as much as physically possible, and direct pipeline integration into core warehouses allowing seamless downstream processing.

Founded
Through a combination of expedition-based adventure and a career in digital infrastructure, Applied Research Engineering was founded by Archie Dawe in 2025 out of London, with the global mission of accelerating modern data and AI practices into the world of conservation and outdoor research.
ARE was founded on the belief that it is imperative we take a data-first approach if we are to extract maximum value from our work as a species, and nowhere will it be more impactful than in experimental, research based work.
